They are sixth graders in a Hawaiian homestead community. They are resilient in the face of poverty. Our school lacks many of the opportunities that are meaningful and engaging for them. Our school's music program was cut several years ago. It's time they have access to the enrichment they deserve.
Twelve good-quality ukuleles are the exact thing I can integrate into my math class. I'm eager to get started. For some, it will unlock their talent. For others, it will help them focus and engage in learning, and for a few, it will give them simple refuge from their difficult lives.
