Gone are the days where math is done with paper and pencil. Students need a variety of materials to work through math concepts that are abstract. Math manipulatives, such as base-ten blocks and fraction sets, allow students to visualize what a math problem is asking them to do.
Hands-on learning helps all learners have access to difficult curriculum.
All of these materials can be used in large group and small group instruction. The use of whiteboards is almost a daily activity in my classroom, especially in math. Using the workshop model in math, students come to the rug with whiteboards for guided practice and to record modeled strategies. The whiteboards allow me to see exactly what they are doing, as well as provide an easy place for them to show and share their work. By donating to this project, you will not only provide materials to students who are excited about math, you will also be giving students the ability to access the content they are learning about.
