My learners come from all backgrounds and are at all skill levels. There are several who have IEPs, 504s, and who are ELLs. I teach 6th, 7th and 8th grade English at a democratic, unionized public charter school in the Bay Area, California, where the learners help to make the rules and are encouraged to take charge of their own learning. We also have a jury system for when learners break the rules, and which the teachers are also subject to if a learner feels they have broken a rule. We focus on project based learning that benefits the surrounding local (and international) community, as well as harnesses creativity.
My learners have endless amounts of energy that needs to be expressed. They are curious, intelligent and eager to show what they know, especially when it comes to anime, drawing, gaming and computer programming. I have some avid readers who astound me with the breadth of the subjects they read, and I have some athletes whose only wish is to be outside playing their sport.
