My Kindergarten students are at risk! Our school serves 59 Kindergarten students, 24 of which (40%) are at significant risk in their reading performance due to learning disabilities, intellectual handicaps, ESL, or other language-based difficulties. We also have homeless students and those who miss school due to health conditions such as Type 1 Diabetes or life threatening allergies. Studies show if these students do not receive help to improve their reading skills, they are more likely to fall significantly behind their peers and eventually drop out of school.
There are also 7 children in our Kindergarten classes who are significantly above grade level in reading and math. 4 of these children are already reading above a 2nd grade level. These students need differentiated learning opportunities that will challenge and stimulate them.
My school is not a Title I school which means that we do not receive additional federal funds to meet our special needs.
