Our K-8 public school serves at-risk students in arguably the most impoverished and violent neighborhood in the nation.
Despite this, I maintain a high expectation for my students. However, sometimes expecting them to bring a pencil to school is naive, given their world. These kids are bright and take pride in themselves when they succeed. They need opportunity, a lot of support and peace in the community.
Our district is not only "distressed," it is also broke. The materials I am requesting will help fill the void left by state education budget cuts.
