Our children often have not had the opportunities and experiences to which many of their peers have been exposed. Many of our students will be the first generation to graduate from high school. For many, their first consistent exposure to English is with us in Kindergarten. My task, everyday, is to design and deliver curriculum that helps close the gaps in their knowledge, skills and language to help them access the curriculum. They work hard every day towards their goals. They know their families and teachers expect excellence and give all their effort to meet the challenge. Many of our students have faced or are facing severe hardships in their lives which creates impedes their ability to easily meet grade level standards. We work hard to meet them where they are academically and to challenge those students who are above grade level. It will be through a quality education that many of these students will be able to move into a higher economic level.
