The school I work at has a very high poverty rate. Over 90% of my students receive free or reduced price lunch. The students come from very diverse backgrounds, but one thing they all have in common is that they bursting with creativity. This art class focuses on projects with math and science elements and allows them to let the creativity out and bring core content learning in.
My 7th and 8th graders are really excited for the opportunity to do some art. Up until now, these students have not had any opportunity to do art in school at the middle school level. Not only will they have fun creating art projects they can be proud of but they will also be honing their math and science knowledge and skills. Currently, about a third of my students are below benchmark in both math and science.
