Hi! My name is James Sehring. My course is designed around the idea that as social scientists, "we study the past to understand the present and make better decisions for the future."
We develop a set of skills that help students make meaning of a variety of texts, from nonfiction articles to primary source documents to images of ancient artifacts.
We build speaking and listening skills, looking closely at current events and then holding student led, teacher moderated whole class discussion of those current events that students are most passionate about.
We use our understanding of ancient civilizations and the issues we face in our own society to craft argument and opinion essays supported by rigorous independent research.
Importantly, we do all of this in a racially, socio-economically integrated classroom tailored to a variety of learning styles, emphasizing student progress and effort.
