My school is wonderfully diverse: we have a mix of Asian, Black, Hispanic, and Caucasian students who work well together. We are a strong academic school, but we also have great programs in art, music, and sports.
My students are diverse in many ways. Their math backgrounds and skills are wide-ranging. Some students with special needs struggle with math foundations, other students may have a reasonably firm foundation in math, but have gaps in their skills, and some high flying students need challenging work to keep them engaged.
In one class I have students who cannot place 1/2 on a number line, while other students can readily reduce complex fractions. My students represent a wide range of family backgrounds. Some students live in public housing and have never been far from their neighborhood, while other students live in affluent neighborhoods and have traveled extensively. The wide range of experiences makes it necessary to adapt assignments so they are engaging and relevant to all of my students.
