I am a first year teacher at a Title 1 school, where most students receive a free lunch. The majority of my students live in apartment complexes and trailer parks near school and do not speak English at home.
My school is home to roughly 1,000 learners. The community is safe, encouraging, and collaborative. The school library is large and inviting. To accommodate the large population, students are only able to visit the library every two weeks for fifteen minutes. This gives them roughly five minutes to browse and the remaining time is spent checking out. I don't feel this is an adequate amount of time spent in the company of books!
My students are hungry for knowledge. They enjoy researching on ipads, working with manipulatives, reading with a classmate, and listening to stories. The pages of their writers notebooks are filling with ideas and stories. They are excited to participate, discuss, and share ideas. They are struggling with reading and need support.
