Our Makerspace is about learning to think about what makes things work and creative options when circumstances don't offer plenty of the perfect materials. Inside Westside's Makerspace, we have had fun with ozobots and Dash robots. We are learning to think like scientists and engineers. During a STEAM unit in February, the first grade students had the opportunity to consider recycling and up-cycling materials to make toys and useful household items. They studied how students their age in India make toys from found items. The third grade students became interested in weather, in particular how to build structures like towers and bridges to stand up to wind and weight. Students will be learning from home. But they come to school to pick up a breakfast/lunch sack. We can have another sack with instructions challenging them to MAKE. They can take pictures and share their creations with peers -- we are 1:1 with iPads and Chromebooks. Tape is essential. You cannot make a bridge out of straws without something to hold it together.
