My students are 6th grade inclusion Special Education students. Most are students that are reading at levels that are far below grade level; with difficulties in comprehension and fluency. Our school is in a high poverty area with about 65% receiving reduced-price or free lunch. It is a small school with just a little over 500 students in grades 6-8.
Our school uses the Accelerated Reader program, in which students read books in their zone of proximal development. These books allow for growth while maintaining their current reading level. The students take quizzes on each book they read and earn points based on number of correct responses. While there are thousands of books with quizzes on the AR website, our library is very small and does not have enough books to go around. Students are left to check out books that do not interest them and they do not score well on these quizzes. With access to high interest books, my students would be able to grow while enjoying what they read!
