My students attend a public school that is located in a high poverty area, adjacent to a public housing project. About a third of them are learning English as a second language. Few of them have access to books, a quiet space where they can read or someone to read with at home. They love our daily read alouds, but so many of them lack the confidence and skills to independently read the types of stories they enjoy hearing so much.
Like most kids, and many adults too, they will jump at any chance they get to use technology and often will actually forget that they are learning or doing work when they get to use anything with a screen!
