"Humpty Dumpty," "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star"...Do you remember the joy of learning through movement and music? My Kindergarten students learn best when they are active participants in the learning, and not just sitting in a chair or on a rug. They might have trouble learning words or letters, but if we sing them, they master them quickly. They like to wiggle and jiggle and need lots of opportunities to move. Our school is in a semi-rural area. Many of my students are being raised by grandparents and single parents. They don't get a lot of academic attention at home and many do not have access to computers, laptops, iPads, or iPhones at home. They lack basic experiences with technology and our classroom only has 1 computer, 1 laptop, and 1 iPad. Most of them stare at a television at home and have yet to develop small muscle and eye-hand coordination. Many have never held a pencil. They get little to no exercise. Singing the alphabet while jumping rope, or hopping onto words, would be right up their alley!!
