My school is made up of a very diverse population of students. We are a school-wide title one building with over 54% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. We have a growing ESL population. Their parents are not fluent in English. Due to their families' economic challenges and home life situations many of my first graders have not been exposed to literacy and the joy of reading during their formative years. They love listening to me read stories, all trying to sit as close to me as possible. I am trying to provide as many opportunities as I can for them to hear fluent readers reading text in an engaging manner. Along with myself I invite guest readers into our classroom and use an old tape player with books on tape. I want the children to develop a love of reading and the knowledge of what a fluent reader sounds like.
