My students are preschoolers with special needs (Down Syndrome, Speech and Language Impairments, Autism, etc.). They are excited to learn new skills, but have much more difficulty doing so than typically developing children. They love music, which is why I ordered musical instruments since we have a lack of them. As Walt Disney said, "I would rather entertain and hope that people learned something than educate people and hope they were entertained." My goal too is for the kids to have fun while learning.
We follow a Houghton Mifflin Curriculum and modify it to meet the needs of each child. The children are at various levels, so we must differentiate instruction to meet the needs of each student.
My elementary school is a Title 1 school. Most families are from low income households and most qualify for free lunch. Our school is full of mostly Hispanic children that come from disadvantaged backgrounds.
