My students work in a Title I school, which provides free/reduced meals for the majority of the students. We do not have a great deal of parent involvement and for the last five years, we have not achieved passing test scores. Three-fourths of my third graders are reading below grade level. About half are English language learners, and there are a number of special education students in our class as well.
Regardless of the challenges we may face, the students in my class have formed a tight-knit community of learners. We love to learn with and from each other, like many families do. We know how to respect ourselves and each other, and realize that school is a special place where our ideas flourish and grow!
