My English 10 Classroom needs diverse reading opportunities. The current available texts at my school simply do not give students the breadth of cultural viewpoints and understanding that is needed in today's growing multicultural world. "Before the Coffee Gets Cold" blends elements of Japanese culture, specifically social norms and family dynamics, with an entertaining and hopeful story of time travel and coffee. Through this world literature novel from four unique narrators, students can delve into the very real dilemma of handling regret and what comes after. I will use this story to focus on key elements of Japanese society, and also give my 10th grade students the cultural diversity to make them active members in a growing society.
