My class typically has 1/4 of the students absent: sick, family obligations, skipping. They tend to hate reading and writing, because they've been told they are bad at it their whole lives. Most of my students are behind on credits, were invisible at the "big" high school, and just need someone to see them believe in them, help them understand and reach their potential. I know most of them throughout their time at my school, whether I'm their teacher that year or not.
My school takes the "hopeless", lost cases in our district and gets them on the right path. We put out fires every day. We deal with many crisis cases, poverty, free-and-reduced, and have a high special ed population. We keep our classes smaller in order to give more attention to each student. Our staff bends over backwards to let the students know we see them, we care, we are there for them.
