I teach at a Title 1, high poverty school with limited resources due to budget cuts needed to successfully engage my young first graders. The teachers are creative and we all work long & hard to "make" many of the items we need and even dig into our own pockets. But along with the budget cuts for student resources, teachers' pay has also been significantly cut which has limited many of us from digging too deep into our pockets. My students need that extra attention to reading and comprehension that they don't get at home. With our class sizes so large (30 first graders to one teacher), it makes it hard to give individualized attention to everyone's specific needs. With the engagement of effective literacy centers (a powerful listening station and phonics, vocabulary, writing, and comprehension that are engaging); we have a wonderful opportunity to make a difference in their love of learning.
