My students are from a neighborhood of Los Angeles valuing arts and music. It is diverse community socio-economically and culturally. My classes are jazz band, ukulele, guitar, and choir.
The jazz band is also a pep band. They support our football team by performing at football games and school performance. There is also a small group of students from this group who also perform as a jazz combo, and coached by the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz based from UCLA. They are an exciting group of students who love playing and learning.
There is also a ukulele class. Here students love learning popular music from this little economical instrument. Students are found through out our campus playing ukulele as a result of the music being presented in my classroom.
Our guitar class is also very popular. It feeds our rock band program, where students participate in activities such as The Battle Of The Bands, where students perform for their school peers at lunch time.
