In this era, its not enough to be able to repeat facts, you must be able to make educated decisions about the information placed before you. Scholastic "Scope" and Scholastic New York Times "UpFront" allow my students new materials to decipher and debate about the world we live in. They also provide rigorous, CCSS skill sheets that just aren't available in our 8 year old textbooks. Those formatting elements keep the students engaged.
In addition, students are expanding their horizons about nations, economies, elections, literary genres, and being an active citizen right from their classroom chairs. They can see the difference children can make!
