My students are avid readers and love to discover new books and talk to each other about their favorites. Students in my classroom have always read at a variety of levels, but this year, for the first time, I am teaching about 30 students who have been in the US for fewer than 4 years and are rapidly learning the language. If they are placed in my English/language arts class, they have a lot of conversational English vocabulary, but are working hard to develop academic English and learn to comprehend complex sentence structure. For many of them, this is their first year outside of a small, sheltered English immersion classroom.
