Students study backcountry conservation practices, leadership skills, wilderness survival and first aid, technical rock climbing, and preparing for and participating in an overnight backpacking trip. Due to lack of funding, students are required to supply their own backpacking gear. Our school has a high poverty rate and many students may not able to participate in the overnight trip due to lack of accessible gear. The stoves and cookware requested is often the hardest gear for students to access.
