Students will improve their reading skills while working on collaborative projects to create a raised garden outside of our classroom trailer. While studying historical aspects of a slave's inner strength while secretly learning to read, students will study how to grow flowers and vegetables. This will allow students to incorporate STEM skills while producing food they can take home to their families. Students will also make connections from the behaviors in the past to current events and determine ways to approach racial injustice.
Our garden will create an environment in which students can imagine the novella's setting while learning new vocabulary. Anytime students can get out of a chair, apply knowledge, and get their hands a little dirty, they stay engaged and learn more.
