Students with specific learning disabilities are easily bored. I strive to use a variety of instructional technologies to help them master the regular education curriculum. Utilizing apps and creating avatars engage them and they master the curriculum while having fun. They love technology. My classroom is an 11th grade US History class for students with specific learning disabilities. We cover the same curriculum as our regular education peers. Unfortunately, most of my students do not have smart phones or iPads to access the cool apps that can make learning so much more engaging and fun. Many of my students live in depraved conditions and benefit from free and reduced lunch and breakfast. Many tell me that they come to school because the law says they have to and that they do not like to read or learn. By the end of the semester, many change their tune and tell me that they love my class because it is warm and creative. We find ways to interact with the curriculum and learn.
