All of my 23 fifth grade students struggle with reading or math and come to my classroom for additional help in their area of greatest need. Most struggle in both areas. All of my reading students and most of my math students are reading below grade level, with my lowest just recently reaching a 2nd grade level for the first time this school year. Some struggle with comprehension skills, others with reading fluency (speed and accuracy). Many struggle with both. Our school has six 5th grade classrooms, half of which lack a classroom library, and the Media Center is not part of the 5th grade special area rotation. Most of my students do not read at home. Many spend reading time in their regular classrooms looking around or staring into space while holding a chapter book that is well beyond their level of understanding, just to fit in. My library is open to all of my students. They can sign out my books and keep them as long as is necessary to finish reading and test on them.
