My students have been diagnosed with Autism as well as Speech/Language delays. Nine out of the ten are non-verbal. The school that these students attend is in an urban area with a high rate of poverty. So, they have many struggles to face now and in the future. Children with Autism have varying degrees of academic needs as well as social/emotional deficits. My students have to work on pre-academic skills each day but also social/emotional skills, fine motor and even self-help skills. Many of them have sensory integration difficulties which require sensory breaks like jumping on a trampoline, wearing a weighted vest or even playing in sand. Although these children have special needs, high expectations are always held. Not only I as their teacher but the principal and other staff believe in these children. They can be successful if given the opportunity and taught in a manner in which they can learn. I see it everyday when they walk into the classroom and smile!
