Youth today are not traditional learners, yet we continue having them file in the classroom and sit in traditional desks. My students need flexible seating to help them find comfort in the classroom so that they can become more engaged in their learning. When students are excited about coming into the class, they will be more excited and invested in their own learning. Flexible seating also allows the students the power of choice. When students feel empowered, their potential skyrockets! Flexible seating also encourages collaboration and community within the classroom. I want to encourage my students to become productive members of their community and to learn to collaborate with their peers by having flexible seating in my classroom! The tables I have chosen for this project are tall tables which will allow for the height of the majority of my middle school students. Tall tables also bring about the illusion of a coffee shop or lounge room which allows students a different level of comfort and confidence within the classroom. Having a variety of shapes in the seating also encourages collaboration and engagement in their learning.
