Our school is a suburban elementary school with a lot of the characteristics of a very urban school. About 90% of the students receive free and reduced lunch. In addition, 50% of our students speak a language other than English at home. The major languages represented in our school are Spanish, Hmong, and West African dialects.
Our students are enthusiastic and bring a very wide range of experiences and knowledge to us. Some of our students come to us as refugees. They may be in the second or third grade, but have never attended school in the past. Other students come in highly educated in their first language and are putting English words to their deep knowledge base.
This school is absolutely a microcosm of the "global village."
