We are a public urban high school with more than 50 languages spoken in the hallways. Although we are located in the least diverse state in the country, Maine, this high school is a true experiment as well as testament to the growing diversity across the USA. More than 30% of our 1000 students speak a language other than English at home. Many are refugees who have fled atrocities and famine. Some students come with a strong formal education in their first language, while others arrive at the age of 15 or 16 having never set foot in a classroom. I teach English through Biology and Literature to immigrants and refugees.
