These books will help our school begin to build libraries rich with literature from diverse backgrounds and about topics relevant to our students' interests. As we continue our district initiative WeRead, the books will be used to support our independent reading program and also used as a measure of our school's progress toward our 2021SY reading goal of 59% proficiency, up 9 percentage points from our current scores of 50%.
With the reopening of our school library last school year and the presence of our WeRead initiative, students have been eager to read more books, but often tell us that there are no books that represent them. A further look at our school and classroom libraries indicates that this is true. The books we have do not reach the total population of our building. We cannot overstate the value added to reading achievement by simply adding books that are relatable, high interest, and from notable, award-winning authors.
