Our diverse student population of Hispanic, Caucasian, Asian, and African-American live in urban or suburban areas. Many of these students come from socioeconomic disadvantage families and English is typically not their first or only language spoken, especially at home. Although small mountain ranges surround our valley, many have not been hiking or even visited the surrounding wilderness areas. Our students have a lot of school spirit and many participate in extra-curricular activities or volunteer within our community. The school is very student-centered and focused on safety, critical thinking, technology, and communication within the classroom and school community.
Since my students have very little exposure to the surrounding environment, my goal is to integrate more hands-on labs and field work into my environmental science curriculum. I truly believe students connect to the content by critically analyzing and applying the content learned.
