I am requesting these iPads for my English Language Learners(ELLs). I teach in an urban school where many of my students speak English as their second language. Some of my students are new to this country and the experience of school as well. They are refugees who were unable to attend school in their country because they were poor and/or because they were girls.
Using apps on the iPads can help to develop their English. There are also apps that can be used for books. As a fourth grader, these ELL learners want to read what their peers are reading. Programs can be downloaded that can read books of high interest to the children that they would not be able to read on their own. Both of these examples would provide opportunities for the students to develop their vocabulary, create a love of literature and help bridge the gap that develops in our schools between native and non-native speakers.
