Students need to see their own diverse selves reflected in novels and literature. Night is a story that speaks of perseverance despite tremendous odds. This message is one that my students need to read about and reflect upon as it relates to their own lives. Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie is a novel that appeals to reluctant readers like many of my students.
Literature offers my students a window to the world and a way for them to understand that learning is a powerful tool. With the addition of these books in my classroom library, I will be able to offer students the experience of reading great literature and connecting with it as it relates to their own experiences.
