I'm an elementary social worker at an academically rigorous charter school, serving students in grades K-4. Our population is 100% African-American and Latino, and 98% low-income. While I am present in every classroom, I primarily work with scholars with special needs: emotional disorders, ADHD, and Autism spectrum disorders. Many of them present with difficulties in coping skills, emotional expression, problem solving, and empathy.
We successfully equip all of our scholars to be lifelong learners, but we also seek to transform them into excellent citizens. The use of a social-emotional curriculum will help us achieve this end.
