My students are high school students in a rural public school in South Carolina with a 57% free/reduced lunch population. My students originally started band in the sixth grade, and after entering high school band class, volunteer to give their time tirelessly to a marching band program that competes at the state level, performs at all football games, and performs at various school and county functions proudly.
By beginning band in the sixth grade, my students form strong cohort bonds and camaraderie, much like a family. Self-discipline, dedication, leadership, team work, pride, maturity, and commitment are just a few of the skills participating in a marching band program instill in all involved. They dedicate time in their daily school schedule for band class, give up their summers for marching band rehearsals, and give up after school time and weekends from August through October each year to perfect their show and compete at the highest level possible.
