I am one of the lucky teachers. I have a huge classroom and relatively small (30 or under) class sizes. Right now, because of the layout, I am only able to use about half of my classroom for instructional purposes. If students need an area for quiet, for collaboration, or for creativity, they have to go to the library or the hallway, out of my view and away from my instruction and supervision. This seating and work area will fix that.
The entire flexible seating area will be a personal electronics device-free zone!
Couches and tables will allow collaboration and review as well as reading areas. The four gaming chairs can be moved around the room for more student choice.
Reading is the cornerstone of everything that I do. My goal is to create readers who read outside of class, at home, and after they graduate. Real readers don't read in desks; we read sprawled on the floor, on couches, and in groups. We talk about the books we are reading. We have stacks of books at our fingertips at all times. My classroom will be able to look like real life.
The furniture in this project will allow me to work with the classroom tables and area that I have to create 5-6 flexible work areas. We will come together as a class for instruction and teacher-led activities, but student-led and individual work can be done in the space that best fits the activity and outcome.
