My students are unaccompanied Latin American migrant teens apprehended by INS at US/MX border. They attend classes for a 4-40 day period while housed in a transitional facility. They are ages 8-17, hailing from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Ecuador. Most are native Spanish speakers, but others speak indigenous Mayan languages. Some have had a decade of formal schooling; others have only had only days, but all students share the same drive and determination to come out ahead.
Many have endured pangs of literal hunger and the aches of prolonged separations from families, but--in spite of traumatizing and often horrific circumstances--the students that find themselves in my classroom are all ready to put in the effort to learn something new, to know something that they have never known, and to build something more than they have ever had.
This school site is a pilot initiative of NYC DOE and partner agencies. Teachers and other staff work as team to support students.
