My students attend the very first permanent online school affiliated with the Saint Paul Public Schools. We are very proud our small, yet strong community. Our middle schoolers have either chosen to stay home and learn, or they are health compromised and attending school in person would jeopardize their health or the health of someone in their immediate family.
As a teacher, I recognize the importance of socialization and emotional supports for middles schoolers. At this age, many lack confidence and are wanting to fit in and belong. By creating a Math Team, and a Chess Club, I am giving them an opportunity to socialize with peers, create bonds of friendship which helps them not to feel so isolated while they sit there in front of their computers.
We have a lot of fun! It is great to hear them laugh, and talk to each other, and help each other. They are a part of something larger than their computer screen - they are part of a team, a community. They are proud. I want them to be able to wear their team shirts just like the students who go to school in person. I want to give them some normalcy and instill a sense of pride and confidence in them, that will help them stand strong in a world that is so uncertain. They deserve this.
