The right books are contagious, infecting people young and old with an incurable love of reading. At our school my Principal is emphatic about the importance of promoting literacy and authentic reading. A culture of reading has been created in our school.
We start off the day reading independently or in small groups in class. Later, we discuss what we are reading during our snack, which is a great way to share titles and have students identify as readers. In addition, we read a classroom novel, short story or poem together everyday.
We are nearly finished The Outsiders as our classroom novel. Fewer things are more special than 30 students with their heads in books, eagerly waiting the next line. Even the most reluctant and struggling readers pay great attention to the story during our reading block.
We will be reading the play "12 Angry Men" next, followed by short stories by Ray Bradbury.
We have a Shakespeare club that meets on Mondays.
