I teach in a blended prekindergarten classroom. There are 20 students in each half day program, ages 3-5 years old. Of those 20, 6 have an IEP with a diagnosis of Developmental Delay, Autism, or other health impaired. Several of the remaining students have speech delays and various sensory needs. My school is a Chicago Public School, however we are an early childhood center only, so all the students are prekindergarten age. This provides us with the opportunity to do many all school events and activities, as well as the opportunity to share ideas and materials with every class in the school.
With curriculum moving at a faster rate every day, and the challenges students and teachers face to keep up while remaining developmentally appropriate, we are always looking for ways to provide an authentic, hands-on learning approach for our students. Having a sensory rich environment is key.
