I teach middle grades mathematics to special needs students in the resource classroom setting. Students have various challenges (learning/ behavior/ health) which adds to the pressure of meeting the rigorous demands of Common Core Standards in math. The school is considered high needs because over half of the student body receives free and reduced lunch. Despite the challenges-academic/ socio-economic-my students have a strong desire to rise above their circumstances and aspire to attend college and become productive citizens. Because most of my students are visual and tactile learners, using ipads will allow me to differentiate instruction through the use of learning apps in order to maximize the academic obtainment of my students. The school I teach at has a very limited number of ipads for the whole school to use thus, my students receive very little exposure to instructional tools that could provide them with academic support and reinforcement of concepts.
