Teachers will be able to use the literature for "Read-Alouds" or for students' independent reading. The instructional focus will be on a component of empathy (compassion, cultural diversity, disabilities, etc.,) while also teaching academic literacy skills. Students would be required to keep an Empathy Journal documenting how they are implementing empathy in their daily lives. Each classroom would be encouraged to choose one book to develop an empathy project around. For instance, a class may decide to write letters of kindness to other classes in the building or to an outside community outreach program. the key is to get students involved in actively implementing empathy in action. Ultimately, all classrooms would present their projects in a school wide assembly that would encompass the school and community members.
