The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge, but imagination” Albert Einstein captures the sentiment of many of our teachers. We recognize that creative people are curious, flexible, persistent and motivated by the spirit of adventure. Through social play and group collaboration we hope to engage students in enjoyable activities all focused around building 21st century skills. Recess is a time of day where we believe students can have a big take away, all while playing in a relaxed and enjoyable setting. We envision our grade levels acquiring a collection of indoor recess STEAM activities, games, kits, and more that enable students’ exposure to the 4C's of learning: critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity. We would like students to engage in productive play on the days weather prevents us from the great outdoors.
The support of this grant will provide our learners with an opportunity to engage over 600 students in STEAM oriented hands-on experiences.
Critical Thinking: to be open-minded and consider alternative ways of looking at solutions (ex: Quirkle, Rummikub, Stratego).
Collaboration: learners believe in teamwork! Group members share their creative minds and complement each other’s strengths (ex: Kinex LEGO Chain Reactions, Design & Build Engineering Centers).
Communication: understanding that communicating is a two way process. Listening is just as important as talking. We manage emotions and assert our thoughts in a respectable manner (ex: Slapzi, Pictionary, Itzi).
Creativity: an opportunity for self-expression and chance to bring independent visions to life (Kinex Sets, Magna Tiles, Bristle Blocks, Lincoln Logs).
Our wish- list has been specifically chosen to offer our students experiential learning, chances to persist in problem-solving, embrace team collaboration, and work creatively. Each item will be shared throughout classrooms and are durable enough to continue to be used year after year.
