Students arrive in my urban third grade classroom with a wide range of academic and social skills. Because they are still quite young, they are very open to discovery. They love to learn! They want to know everything! Reading is a favorite activity- especially series books or books by the same author. Sharing a book with a friend is a special treat, whether it with a peer or a kindergarten buddy. Many of the children are bilingual. While some students are reading at first grade level, many others are reading at the 5th or 6th grade level. There is a wide gap in their knowledge of vocabulary. While we spend time studying vocabulary and spelling in third grade, vocabulary is best learned through actual reading and speaking. We read many books together in class and spend a good part of the day pouring through non-fiction text to learn about the world around us.
