We have been working diligently on playground fundraising efforts at our school for the past three years. It has been the sole responsibility of the families and staff of our school to fundraise monies needed to replace old and unsafe playground equipment. By the summer of 2015, we had raised enough funds to purchase one playground structure with one comet spinner (modern day merry-go-round) as an additional piece to the side. These pieces were installed, and are loved and well utilized by our student body, the kids attending our before and after school childcare program, and the kids in the community!
Although the playground has improved, we still have large gaps where unsafe pieces have been removed that we would like to fill with new updated, safe, and engaging equipment. The comet spinner, that was installed during the summer of 2015 project, is very popular, and it is often overcrowded. Students need to wait in long lines in order to receive even one turn in a 15-20 minute recess time. We would like to install an additional comet spinner in a voided space on our playground in order to eliminate this long wait time for our students. Our students' time for play within our school day is limited, so we want to ensure that they are involved in play the entire time they spend on our playground.
There are a number of current and former students of GLW Elementary who benefit and have benefited from multi-sensory experiences both inside the classroom and outside. Many students receiving special education services at G.L.W. find a spinning motion to be very calming, and we often see a number of our special education students utilizing the one comet spinner that is currently found on our playground space.
