My school is a large Title One school in a community south of Yuma, Arizona. We have a large population of English Language Learners who are excited about school and motivated to learn. In fifth grade, we are preparing students to transition to middle school. We focus on learning study strategies, expanding our vocabulary to include academic level words, and developing our confidence as scholars. My students have persevered through the toughest challenges. They continue to work on higher levels. My students are able to teach me as much or more than I teach them. This helps to make us a community of lifelong learners. Collaborative groups and discussion involving student engagement help us to create a true atmosphere of support in our rural border community. My students believe they are destined for great things, and that being a dedicated student is the way to achieve any goal they set for themselves.
