Most of the students at our local high school are from migrant families. Their parents are often field workers and the students themselves often spend his or her summers working in the fields along side their parents and siblings. Most of my shop students are hard working young men and women. They do not want to be in the classroom but would rather spend time in our shop or on the school farm. While most of the students feel as if they will not leave their home town, I encourage them to seek out training which would set them above the crowd. Most of my students are intelligent, but often fail to see the "real-world" connection to why they need a formal education. I feel as if it is my responsibility to teach each student why he or she needs an education as well as how to use his or her education.
