It's difficult to imagine constructing an office building, giving a work presentation, conducting research, or even getting through the day without our technology tools. It is possible, but it puts one at a disadvantage when others are completing tasks faster and to a higher level of precision using these tools. It is no different in education. While, our previous 8th graders have successfully completed their 8th grade year without graphing calculators, they have had a continual disadvantage over their peers not only in 8th grade, but when they get to high school and don't know how to use them. These calculators will deepen our students' understanding of the 8th grade PA common core standards: exponential expressions, linear equations, systems of equations, functions, scientific notation, volume, Pythagorean Theorem, and qualitative graphs. My students need access to technology. Graphing calculators are a staple in higher math classes everywhere. We want our students to go into high school confident both in their math skills and use of technology.
